The Ghana Deposit Protection Corporation (GDPC) has organized a two-day media orientation workshop for editors and business reporters from fifteen leading media houses across the country as part of efforts to enhance public awareness and understanding of the Ghana Deposit Protection Scheme (GDPS).
The workshop, held on May 13 and 14, 2026, at the African Regent Hotel in Accra, sought to strengthen the media's knowledge of the key features of the GDPS and the recently amended Ghana Deposit Protection (GDP) Act. The initiative was also aimed at building the capacity of journalists to accurately report on deposit protection issues in Ghana.
Addressing participants at the opening session, the Chief Executive Officer of the GDPC, Mr. Galahad Alex Andoh, Esq., emphasized the critical role of the media in promoting transparency, accountability, and informed public discourse in democratic societies.
He noted that the media occupies a strategic position in interpreting and communicating economic, financial, and corporate developments to the public.
“Through your reporting and analysis, you help shape public understanding and confidence in institutions and policies that impact the financial sector and the broader economy,” Mr. Andoh stated.
According to him, the Corporation considers collaboration with media institutions essential in advancing public awareness and understanding of the benefits and key features of Ghana’s deposit protection framework.
“We consider this orientation programme not merely as an information-sharing platform, but as the beginning of a long-term partnership between GDPC and the media fraternity,” he remarked.
The workshop provided participants with insights into the concept and practice of deposit insurance, the operational framework of the Ghana Deposit Protection Scheme, and key provisions of the recently amended Ghana Deposit Protection (Amendment) Act.
The orientation forms part of GDPC’s broader stakeholder engagement strategy aimed at promoting public confidence in Ghana’s financial system and ensuring that depositors are well informed about the protection available to them under the Scheme.
